How Many of Us Have Them?

Since I don't have sisters, I cherish my girlfriends like we came from the same womb. I know that I can confide in them, laugh with them, share my deepest secrets with them, and vice versa. I've learned so much about myself from them. They have taught me that just like with family, a friend's love should be unconditional. They've allowed me to open my mind to different perspectives and opinions, taught me about careers, life, love, and all that good stuff. And they're all still teaching me things to this day! Our bond is pretty tight. We're shutting down the idea that good girlfriends are hard to come by.

So Far, So Good

I've been a government employee for a week now! Lol. A lot of you have been asking me how the new job is going so far, and I would like to start off by saying, thanks for asking! Everything is going pretty well. I know it's only been a week, but I like this new gig quite a bit already. I mean, I no longer have to pay for parking, so how could it get any better?!

Movin' On Up

I really think I'm the queen of switching jobs. In 2016 alone, I worked for four different companies. Which means I had four separate W-2 forms sent to my house. Why, Lawd?

Now, I'm sure you're thinking, "You loved your new job, why are you leaving?" And you are correct...I did love working for Warby Parker, and I encourage anyone in the customer service or optical industry to consider them if you're looking for a new place to work, but I truly felt that this was my time to make some big things happen for myself.

16 Things I Learned in 2016

Another year down, more lessons learned. Every time the new year hits, I always feel like I'm going to become a new person. I make this long, elaborate list of resolutions that I say I'm going to achieve by the time the next new year rolls around. Sometimes I'm successful, other times I'm not. So instead of making another long list of cookie-cutter goals, I decided to reflect on what I learned in 2016. I hope that some of the things on this list will resonate with you. Happy 2017, y'all!

"Fashion D-Fined"

On one of my commutes home from work, I drove past the Detroit Historical Museum and saw a sign outside that read "Fashion D-Fined: The Past, Present and Future of Detroit Fashion." I immediately got excited because I knew that meant there was an amazing exhibit inside for me to check out.

The Posh & Popular Fashion and Beauty Summit

This past weekend I attended the 2016 Fashion and Beauty Summit hosted by Posh and Popular founder Kimberly M. Dobine. It was a one-day conference that featured three keynote speakers and two panel discussions, all which were centered around the business of the fashion and beauty industries.

I've been to A LOT of different fashion conferences before, but I would always leave feeling like there was something missing. While the events I would go to were amazing and very educational, there were never a lot of speakers or presenters that looked like me. The Posh & Popular Fashion and Beauty Summit filled that void, as ALL of the individuals who spoke that day were Black women.

Copycat

Since I've been waiting for my new job to officially start, I've been spending a lot of time in front of the television. One of my favorite things to watch as of late is FX's Atlanta, which comes on Tuesdays at 10 p.m.

The show was created, directed and produced by Donald Glover (a.k.a. Childish Gambino). Glover also stars in the show as Earnest "Earn" Marks, a down-on-his-luck, socially-awkward guy trying to manage his cousin's rap career.

In the show, Earn has an on-again, off-again love interest named Vanessa, who is played by actress Zazie Beetz. Since the show started, I've been loving Vanessa's easy-breezy boho style. It's so effortless, and I'm dying to know where some of her pieces are from!

A Family Affair

My dad turned 60 this September, guys. SIXTY. I don't know why that's so hard for me to believe! I don't tell him this very often, but my daddy is pretty great. He's probably the most selfless person that I know. He's always helping out other people, and is always on the move, even when he's only running off of a few hours of sleep.

Since he does so much for everyone, it was only right that we threw him a big party to celebrate this milestone! Earlier this month, family and friends gathered at the North Rosedale Community Center for a night of dinner, dancing and fellowship. We all had a ball!

One-Hundred Fifty-Eight

One-hundred fifty-eight...that's how many days it's been since my last blog post. Shame, isn't it? For someone that wants to make a career out of fashion blogging/fashion journalism, how dare I fall off so tremendously?

I could give you guys (and myself) an excuse as to why I hadn't been keeping up with Damsel in Detroit like I should've been. I could tell you all about how I was working six days a week, how I didn't have anything cute to wear for pictures, how I didn't know what to write about — but all of those aren't good enough reasons.

In With the Old

Today I had the pleasure of attending the Fashion Group International of Detroit, Inc. tribute luncheon with Shannon Lazovski of Glamorous Moms & Detroit Fashion News. I was excited to be able to be in a room full of stylish & notable people from all over the Metro Detroit area.

Alright, now let's talk about the outfit. I knew that there were going to be some important people at the luncheon today, so I had to make sure I looked just as good as I knew they were going to. After tearing up my room trying to find something nice to wear, and wishing I had the time (and money) to buy a whole new wardrobe, I finally decided on taupe jogger-style pants, a gray top, a blush cropped blazer, and black pointed-toe heels.
