Brown Girls Skate (feat. Lori L. Ward)

Be honest: how many Black figure skaters do you know? Growing up (and still to this day), I only know one Black woman figure skater, and that happens to be one of my besties! I knew there was underrepresentation of Black people – particularly women – in the sport, so when I came across Figure Skating in Detroit, I was excited to see that there was an organization dedicated to introducing local girls of color to figure skating.

In this episode, I got to sit down (virtually!) with Lori L. Ward, Executive Director of Figure Skating in Detroit to talk about how they empower young girls by combining the power of education with the grace and discipline of figure skating.
